    Yeah I had to install these at the company I used to work for. They were used as timeclocks, I don't remember if we were using ADP or Paychex for payroll at the time. We just connected them to ethernet and hosted an app on one of our servers that handled communication between the unit and the payroll service. They had an optional NiCad battery pack and power board that went in the back as a battery backup. We had to RMA them on a fairly regular basis as they would just stop reading peoples hands correctly.

    My guess is that HDD came from another PC - probably Sue's! - with Win 95 and was then moved to this PC and NT installed... without formatting it! That would explain the lack of NTFS as well.

    Regarding the drive not reading when connected through usb: could it be a file system issue? I'm curious if a modern version of Windows could view and older version of NTFS or FAT? In the past I've had trouble viewing spare hard drives I ran on a linux box due to file system.

    • @ThatElectronicsFool

      I was thinking the same thing as well. I think it might be FAT on that drive. I have some older machines that I might be able to check it with, but I haven't had a chance to set up anything just yet.

    I would recommend getting a older core 2 duo system with onboard IDE that is part of the chip-set and not a 3rd party ad on chip for looking at that drive. If that is not possible any system with PCI slots and a PCI to IDE card with its own dedicated bios would do. I would use Linux and image it with ddrescue as that drive does not sound very good. Not sure if there is any software on it that may not be online already.

    • @ThatElectronicsFool
      @ThatElectronicsFool 8 днів тому

      I don't know that I specifically have a C2D board on hand, but I've got a bunch of other stuff that I'm sure I can cobble up something to get it read. As far as the sound of the drive, it's not all that bad, just sounds like a fairly normal spinner of the time. I just had the microphone right up to it so you could hear it ticking away as it loaded. Thank you for the Linux suggestion!

    • @samt4202
      @samt4202 6 днів тому

      @@ThatElectronicsFool It does not have to be a C2D board, it can also be a AMD one. Just needs enough processing power to run a modern Linux distro to run ddrescue and have a hardware based IDE controller. I have had issues with the software based units or the cheap 3rd party add on chips on motherboards that just are there to tick the box for having IDE on the board.

    Yeah, Intel went from no heatsink, to optional heatsink, to mandatory heatsink, to mandatory heatsink with optional fan, to mandatory HSF, all before they started mandating thermal compound. Original Pentium was at that mandatory HSF stage. :)

    Thank you so much for this video! It was your insights that allowed me to connect the stem of my broken Otamatone Deluxe to a custom oscillator circuit. I'm grateful that you shed some light on measuring the resistance range of the touch strip. • @ThatElectronicsFool

      You can find similar strips if you search for "force sensitive resistors." Other than that, one of the few ways I can think of to make one, would be to use graphite material, or something similar, adhered to a strip of some type. Maybe even conductive paint could work. Thanks for watching!

    Would be cool if you could inject audio into that LM386 amp chip and have this device play music. I have an old metal detector that doesn't work and I'm going to try tapping the audio amp and make it play music.

    • @ThatElectronicsFool
      @ThatElectronicsFool 19 днів тому

      One of the earliest uses for a 386 amp I can remember was using one to make a headphone amplifier for a friend. He wanted the music louder than his tape player would output, so I made him a little box that housed a 9V battery along with the circuit. It had a headphone cable on one side that would connect to the tape player headphone output, and then a headphone jack on the box with a combo potentiometer/switch that he could use to adjust the volume.

      If the replacement LCD is exactly the same, I'd check for bridged solder joints or something. Even if it's not completely bridged over, even a tiny bit of conduction between pins could cause them to activate when they shouldn't. Otherwise it sounds like a really unusual issue.

    Would it be possible to replace the main board of the Chinese model to a international mainboard?

    • @ThatElectronicsFool

      No clue, honestly. I have no experience with any models other than this one. I would think they're built fairly identically. The only major difference I've seen mentioned about the two is something about a UV lamp somewhere, I'm assuming, in the base station of the Chinese models. There may be differences in the firmware of the base station and how it communicates with the robot also, though, to make sure they're compatible units. So it may not be as simple as just swapping the boards.

    • @ThatElectronicsFool
      @ThatElectronicsFool Місяць тому

      It's possible that something is jammed between the top cover where the buttons are and the bumper. It's fairly easy to remove the top cover by gently prying off. You'd have to investigate where exactly the friction is though. If it feels like it's somewhere inside the bumper, then there might be something more serious.

    • @ivana6141
      @ivana6141 Місяць тому

      @ThatElectronicsFool I took off the bumper but couldn't see anything obvious. My guess is the cutout for the camera module was too tight as that was the only part creating friction. I bent the bumper springs to overcome the friction and that fixed it.

      I totally agree, for a completely built unit. I was mostly referring to the un-assembled kits being sold where you still have to put it together yourself. I guess it just hurts a bit to see people paying that much when I know I didn't spend that much on it.

    The programming reminds of DOS and CPM, I have not thought of that in years. I like building kits, it is very therapeutic. You did a great job!

      AVRDUDE is probably one of the only command line tools I've had to use recently to program micros. I've never used CPM though, so no idea what that's like. Also, thanks!

    Nice to see that it has been build finally ;) I changed the key functions two years ago, so the first button is "<" back, the second ">" forward, and OK. The newer PCBs also have a fourth button "Top" that allows to exit a menu. The older PCBs can be tweaked or you press Select+Jump together. In the manual you will find the new keyboard assignment and how to add a fourth button if you like.

      I never would've expected the designer himself to see this video so soon after posting! The board looks great and I'm also glad to finally have it completed. I did see the button functions, that you just mentioned, in the manual after I had completed recording and was considering printing some labels to stick to the board. I'll look into that additional button as well. Thank you for the emails notifying of new FW releases. Not only is it nice to know when they are available, but they were also an occasional reminder that I needed to stop putting it off and build the thing!

      Just glad the original regulator didn't blaze up. Would've made it hard to read the numbers on it.
